At the top row of our chart, you’ll see the category numbers established by the CYC, along with the CYC’s skein-shaped symbols. (These symbols, with the category number on the skein’s “label,” are intended for use in printed patterns and on yarn labels to make a yarn’s category easily identifiable.) The second row on our chart sets out the category names used by the CYC. For example, category 0 is Lace, category 1 is Super- fine, and on through category 7, Jumbo.

While the CYC has assigned names for each category, many knitters know these categories by different names. I am accustomed to calling category 4 yarns “worsted-weight” yarns, for instance, instead of “medium.” To help you keep the names straight, the third row of our chart lists the most common names for each category of yarn.
